Lately Listening
1. Woods, From the Horn (Fuck It Tapes): Noodling around.
2. Body Morph, Gel Forms (I Just Live Here Tapes): Really digging this guy's releases of late.
3. Paul Rutherford, The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie (Emanem LP): Solo trombone. Killer record.
4. Body Morph, Negative Face (Arbor Tape): Noise with lower-case saxophone.
5. Miles Davis, Big Fun (Columbia CD): Narrator in Bragi Olafsson's Pets mentioned this album, so I thought I'd give it a spin. Haven't listened to 1970s Miles in some time. Didn't really grab me.
6. Peter Brotzmann, Long Story Short (Trost CDs): Great variety. A few duds. The Keiji Haino solo piece is killer--followed by a Brotz group with Bill Laswell. I've never liked Laswell and assiduously avoid him no matter who he plays with.
7. Hair Police, Beyond Leach Pit (Fuck It Tapes): Early snooze-fest. This group has incredible albums--this isn't one of them.
8. Felicia Atkinson, Crystal Arrows for Cosmic King (Sangoplasmo Tape): One of her best outings in my opinion.
9. Birds of Passage/Je Suis le Petit Chevalier/Motion Sickness of Time Travel/Aloonaluna, Taxidermy of Unicorns (Watery Starve Tape): Awesome packaging, solid tunes. Nice work, ladies.
10. Roscoe Mitchell, Composition/Improvisation Nos. 1, 2 & 3 (ECM CD): Some of the compositions fall flat, but Roscoe is always interesting. Would love to see him live. Maybe Moran will book him at the Kennedy Center.

Moran might book him, but then would insist on playing with him, which would defeat the purpose. His performance with Braxton was LAME.
ReplyDeleteThe Moran record with Sam Rivers on it isn't bad. Do you have any Eli Keszler stuff?
ReplyDeleteNow I do! And darn good it is. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAs for Moran, yes, the Sam Rivers disc is OK, but Moran starting seeing himself as a some sort of genius, and his work on disc suffers from self-importance. In concert, though, he came off as surprisingly weak. He clearly could not get into Braxton's music. Admittedly, not easy, but Laubrock, in contrast, really shone. Now that Moran is jazz director at the KC, we'll see him pop up in a lot more shows.
I have no Eli Keszler stuff but I'm interested. Been interested in Hair Police, any recommendations?
ReplyDeleteDrawn Dead and Constantly Terrified are the stand-out Hair Police records. Both of Keszler's releases on Pan are essential.
