January 2013 Listening

1.       "Aeroplane over the Sea" Neutral Milk Hotel (Merge LP)  still a classic; should be the Sargent Pepper of the turn of the century
2.      " Cats and Dogs" Royal Trux (Drag City LP)

3.      " Everything Falls Apart and More" Husker Du Mould  Hart (Rhino R2 71163 CD) Listen because there is a release of an EP schedule for record store day of the "statues" which is a long form, for this stage of the Husker, by Grant Hart.  Heavy bass and wild drums and guitars drive this song.  The Huskers were a solid punk band than made its way to a seminal alt rock fuzz popsters and my soundtrack through my teens and 20s.
4.       "Solo + Trio Roma" Peter Brotzmann Paal Nilssen-Love Massimo Pupillo (Victo 122/123 CD) Electric bass works for a 68 min piece on disc 2. Long solo where Brotz is more a blue player than anything lately and a Lonely Women cover that is amazing.
5.      " at Molde 2007" Peter Brotzmann Paal Nilssen-Love Ken Vandermark (Okka  CD12072)
6.      "Sauter, Dietrich, Miller, Doherty" Borbetomagus (Agaaric 1980 CD)
7.       "Cuckooland" Robert Wyatt (Domino 2003 LP/CD)
8.       "The Hated Music" Paul Flaherty Chris Corsano (Estatic Yod FYPC16 CD) Tearing it up.  These are men among avant boys.
9.       "Painful" Yo La Tengo (Matador 92298-2 CD)
10.   "Love Bites/Another Music in a Different Kitchen" Buzzcocks (IRS 7243 8 28309 24 CD) Pop and punk done well speak to truth
11.   "The Sophtware Slump" Grandaddy (V2 63661-27986-2   CD) Slacker synth pop which I'm on the fence of
12.   "The Complete Blue Note Recordings" Herbie Nicols Max Roach Art Blakey (Blue Note CD)
13.   "Time Lapse" Evan Parker (Tzadik TZ 8026 CD) There is a sub genre of the solo disc where over dubbing or electronic processing.  It is philosophically weird to me because the solo pieces are improv & uncontrollable with his circular breathing; so now he is laying down a base track and adding to it or processing it in a time delay.  I have a hard time wrapping my head around it.   Still very very good.
14.   "Anthology" Ramones (Rhino R2 75817 CD)
15.   "Brooklyn Cantos" Ken Vandermark Gold Sparkle Trio (Squealer SQLR 039 CD) Kinda just ok

21.   "at the Unity Theatre" Evan Parker Paul Lytton (PSI 3.01 CD)
22.  " Process and Reality" Evan Parker (FMP CD37 CD) again the solo with multi tracking - interesting but bizarre
23.   "Most Material" Evan Parker Eddie Prevost (Matchless MRCD33 CD) Prevost has a style and plays well with EP; need to listen again but this is really strong
24.   "Love Cry" Albert Ayler (Impluse)
25.   "The Pancake Tour" Urs Leimgruber Roger Turner (Relative Pitch Records RPR1007 CD) Another very cool release by Relative Pitch
26.   "Kinsmen" Rudresh Mahanthappa (PI PI26 CD) love the raga vibe and the multiple reeds.  The guitar and indian instrumentation are very cool
27.   "#1 Record/Radio City" Big Star (Stax FCD-60-025 CD) Radio City is good but #1 Record is a masterpiece
