Lately Listening
1. Woods, From the Horn (Fuck It Tapes): Noodling around.
2. Body Morph, Gel Forms (I Just Live Here Tapes): Really digging this guy's releases of late.
3. Paul Rutherford, The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie (Emanem LP): Solo trombone. Killer record.
4. Body Morph, Negative Face (Arbor Tape): Noise with lower-case saxophone.
5. Miles Davis, Big Fun (Columbia CD): Narrator in Bragi Olafsson's Pets mentioned this album, so I thought I'd give it a spin. Haven't listened to 1970s Miles in some time. Didn't really grab me.
6. Peter Brotzmann, Long Story Short (Trost CDs): Great variety. A few duds. The Keiji Haino solo piece is killer--followed by a Brotz group with Bill Laswell. I've never liked Laswell and assiduously avoid him no matter who he plays with.
7. Hair Police, Beyond Leach Pit (Fuck It Tapes): Early snooze-fest. This group has incredible albums--this isn't one of them.
8. Felicia Atkinson, Crystal Arrows for Cosmic King (Sangoplasmo Tape): One of her best outings in my opinion.
9. Birds of Passage/Je Suis le Petit Chevalier/Motion Sickness of Time Travel/Aloonaluna, Taxidermy of Unicorns (Watery Starve Tape): Awesome packaging, solid tunes. Nice work, ladies.
10. Roscoe Mitchell, Composition/Improvisation Nos. 1, 2 & 3 (ECM CD): Some of the compositions fall flat, but Roscoe is always interesting. Would love to see him live. Maybe Moran will book him at the Kennedy Center.

Catching Up -- And Spinning Records Again
When I took off the last LP, I never imagined it would be nearly several weeks before I would put on another. Acute illness, hospitalization, surgery completely interrupted my quotidian habits. Now, hopefully, in the recovery phase, it is once again time to play some music. This was actually more difficult than I anticipated; sickness wants to burrow under the covers in absolute quiet. However, that phase dissolved, and it was great to finally hear music again. I never did get a chance to log some of the rest of my February listening, so I will do that in this post.
1) STEAL YOUR FACE: Grateful Dead. Grateful Dead Records LP.
2) CASTLES OF GHANA: John Carter. Gramavision LP. A true masterpiece.
3) THE GIUSEPPE LOGAN QUARTET. Eponymous. ESP/ Get Back LP. I have an enduring fondness for the free jazz of the 60-70s, including such errant efforts as this.
4) LINED UP: Shriekback. WB 45rpm EP.
5) GRAVE NEW WORLD: Strawbs. A&M LP.
6) MARION BROWN QUARTET. Eponymous. ESP/Get Back LP.
7) TANJAH: Randy Weston. Polydor LP.
8) COMIN' AND GOIN': Jim Pepper. Europa LP. Been curious about Pepper for quite a while. Not really out music, and not really a thoroughly well-formed aesthetic, it still has some compelling moments, especially where Pepper draws on Lakota Sioux elements. Sort of the Sherman Alexie of jazz.
9) 3 COMPOSITIONS OF NEW JAZZ: Anthony Braxton. Delmark LP. Another masterpiece.
10) CHAMPION JACK DUPREE: Eponymous. Blue Horizon LP. Blues Masters Vol. 10. Not as powerful as Muddy or Howlin Wolf, maybe a bit more R&B, but I enjoyed this music. Hope to play more blues in the course of time.
11) OPERATION: MINDCRIME: Queensryche. Capitol LP reissue. Regressing towards adolescence.
12) KING ALBERT: Albert King. Tomato LP. Saw him at Fillmore East.
13) THE OUTSIDE WITHIN: Chico Freeman. India Navigation LP. Early Chico, which means good Chico.
14) REJUVENATION: Flow Trio. ESP CD.
15) PORTRAIT IN JAZZ: Bill Evans Trio. Riverside/Victor Japan LP.
16): A LONG DRINK OF THE BLUES: Jackie McLean. New Jazz/OJC LP.
17) SNURDY McGURDY: Roscoe Mitchell Ensemble. Nessa CD.
18) SLEEPTHIEF: Ingrid Laubrock. Intakt CD.
19) ELTON DEAN'S NINESENSE: Dean, Feza, Malfatti, Beckett, Miller, Moholo, et al. CD. Excellent Brit free jazz.
20) MAN FROM TWO WORLDS: Chico Hamilton with Charles Lloyd, Gabor Szabo. Impulse! LP.
21) COLLISION IN BLACK: Blue Mitchell. Blue Note LP. Not much known, kind of cool.
22) DEMONS AND WIZARDS: Uriah Heep. Mercury LP.
23) NIGHT FANTASIES & PIANO SONATA: Elliott Carter, comp., Paul Jacobs, piano. Nonesuch LP.
24) ITALIAN CONCERTO, CHROMATIC FANTASIA & FUGUE, 4 DUETS: Bach, comp. Rosalyn Tureck, p. LP.
25) SNEAK PREVIEW: Simon Nabatov Trio. Hatology CD. Sort of a last chance for Nabatov. Just don't dig him, so headed for the discard pile.
26) JIMMY CLIFF: Eponymous. Trojan Records LP. I think this is Cliff's first LP. Wonderful.
27) MUSTANG!: Donald Byrd, Mobley, Tyner, et al. Entertaining enough, but not that interesting. I used to wonder and occasionally fulminate why Penguin Guide would give 2.5 stars for BN efforts like this Now I get it.
28) LIVE AT THE LOFT: Lotte Anker, Taborn, Cleaver. I remember seeing Lotte several years ago when she and Ingrid Laubrock were really just starting out. Ingrid has really taken off (deservedly), Lotte not so much (undeservedly). A fine musician. Hope to see her tour this year.
29) LIVE AT THE CAFE MONTMARTRE: Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Arthur Murray. Fantasy/Debut LP. Have always liked this CT album, rooted in club performance, advancing a new aesthetic. Wonderful.
30) KABSHA: Idris Muhammad, Pharoah Sanders, George Coleman. An excellent LP on the little known Theresa label. Pharoah did some recordings for it too.
31) DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH: Judas Priest. CBS LP.
32) THE WAY: Steve Lacy Quintet. Hat Hut 2LP. Brilliance.
33) RAGE IN EDEN: Ultravox. Chrysalis LP.
34) ALMOST LIKE ME: Odean Pope on tenor, Gerald Veasley on electric bass, Cornell Rochester on drums. Moers Music LP. Veaseley lays down some big fat bass and Pope does some big fat blowing, and it works.
35) "A. WE ARE DEVO": Devo. WB LP. Twisted genius.
36) GHOST OF A TRANCE: Peter Kuhn (as, bcl), Wm Parker (on tuba!), Phillip Wilson, et al. Hat Hut LP. Never heard of this album before I spotted it, but it is really quite good. Very Euro free jazz.
37) DONNA LEE: Anthony Braxton. America LP. Yet another masterpiece.
38) ZUMA: Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Reprise LP.
39) THE VILLAGE CALLER! Johnny Lytle (vibes). Cool bop. Riverside/OJC LP.
40) WHERE FORTUNE SMILES: John McLaughlin, Dave Holland, Karl Berger, John Surman. Pye LP. Utterly intense.
Music is the healing force of the universe. Fingers crossed for a better 2013.

January 2013 Listening
1. "Aeroplane over the Sea" Neutral Milk Hotel (Merge LP) still
a classic; should be the Sargent Pepper of the turn of the century
2. " Cats and Dogs" Royal
Trux (Drag
City LP)
3. " Everything Falls Apart and More" Husker Du Mould Hart (Rhino R2
71163 CD) Listen because there is a release of an EP schedule for record store day of the
"statues" which is a long form, for this stage of the Husker, by
Grant Hart. Heavy bass and wild drums
and guitars drive this song. The Huskers
were a solid punk band than made its way to a seminal alt rock fuzz popsters
and my soundtrack through my teens and 20s.
4. "Solo + Trio Roma" Peter
Brotzmann Paal Nilssen-Love Massimo Pupillo (Victo 122/123 CD) Electric bass works for a 68 min piece on disc 2. Long solo where Brotz is more
a blue player than anything lately and a Lonely Women cover that is amazing.
5. " at Molde 2007" Peter
Brotzmann Paal Nilssen-Love Ken Vandermark (Okka CD12072)
6. "Sauter, Dietrich, Miller, Doherty" Borbetomagus
(Agaaric 1980 CD)
7. "Cuckooland" Robert
Wyatt (Domino 2003 LP/CD)
8. "The Hated Music" Paul
Flaherty Chris Corsano (Estatic Yod FYPC16 CD) Tearing it up. These are men among avant boys.
9. "Painful" Yo
La Tengo (Matador 92298-2 CD)
10. "Love Bites/Another Music in a Different Kitchen" Buzzcocks (IRS 7243 8 28309 24 CD) Pop and punk done well speak to truth
11. "The Sophtware Slump" Grandaddy (V2 63661-27986-2 CD) Slacker synth pop which I'm on the
fence of
12. "The Complete Blue Note Recordings" Herbie Nicols Max Roach Art
Blakey (Blue Note CD)
13. "Time Lapse" Evan
Parker (Tzadik TZ 8026 CD) There is a sub genre of the solo disc where over dubbing or electronic
processing. It is philosophically weird
to me because the solo pieces are improv & uncontrollable with his circular
breathing; so now he is laying down a base track and adding to it or processing
it in a time delay. I have a hard time
wrapping my head around it. Still very
very good.
14. "Anthology" Ramones (Rhino R2 75817 CD)
15. "Brooklyn Cantos" Ken Vandermark Gold Sparkle Trio (Squealer SQLR 039 CD) Kinda just ok
15. "Brooklyn Cantos" Ken Vandermark Gold Sparkle Trio (Squealer SQLR 039 CD) Kinda just ok

18. "School of Flowers" Six Organs of Admittance (Drag City DC282CD CD)
17. "Paid in Full - The Platinum Edition" Eric B & Rakim (Island 12 24573 CD)

Guy Paul Lytton (Emanem 4022 CD)
21. "at the Unity Theatre" Evan Parker Paul
Lytton (PSI 3.01 CD)
22. " Process and Reality" Evan Parker (FMP CD37 CD) again the solo with multi tracking - interesting but bizarre
23. "Most Material" Evan
Parker Eddie Prevost (Matchless MRCD33 CD) Prevost has a style and plays well
with EP; need to listen again but this is really strong
24. "Love Cry" Albert
Ayler (Impluse)
25. "The Pancake Tour" Urs Leimgruber Roger
Turner (Relative Pitch
Records RPR1007 CD) Another very cool release by
Relative Pitch
26. "Kinsmen" Rudresh
Mahanthappa (PI PI26 CD) love the raga vibe and the multiple reeds.
The guitar and indian instrumentation are very cool
27. "#1 Record/Radio City" Big Star (Stax FCD-60-025 CD) Radio City is good but #1 Record is a masterpiece
28. "Double Nickel on the Dime" Minutemen (SST LP)
29. "Freedom Suite" David
S. Ware Matthew Ship William Parker (Aum
Fidelity AUM023 CD)
