Just got back from NYC after 10 days, the first half spent following Frank Gratkowski around to every gig, the second half attending the Larry Ochs residency at The Stone. Evan Parker's residency starts in about a week.
1) NEW MYTH/OLD SCIENCE: Greg Ward, Taylor Ho Bynum, Ingrid Laubrock, Mary Halvorson, Jason Adasiewicz, eta al. Ward's project I think, the impressive lineup does not translate into an impressive record. Cuneiform LP.
2) LUNA SURFACE: Alan Silva & The Celestial Communications Orchestra. First side is absolute madness. Silva remains a rather shadowy figure. Actuel/Get Back LP.
3) YOU GOTTA TAKE A LITTLE LOVE: Horace Silver Quintet, Blue Note LP.
4) FURTHER EXPLORATIONS: Horace Silver Quintet. Blue Note LP.
5) THE JAZZ MESSENGERS: Blakey, Silver, Byrd, Mobley. BN LP.
6) SKIZOKE: Frank Lowe, Butch Morris. Cadence Jazz LP.
7) FRESH: Frank Lowe, Lester & Joseph Bowie, Abdul Wadid, Steve Reid, Charles Bobo Shaw. This album continues to improve on me. Arista Freedom LP.
8) EXOTIC HEARTBREAK: Frank Lowe Quintet, Butch Morris. Soul Note LP.
9) THE LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH: Eponymous. IRS LP.
10) THE FIRST CHAPTER: The Mission UK. Mercury LP.
11) EAST BROADWAY RUNDOWN: Sonny Rollins. Impulse LP.
12) SONNY'S TIME: Sonny Rollins. Jazzland LP.
13) THE RAW AND THE COOKED: Corsano, Orcutt. PAL LP. Geetar.
14) BAREFOOT BOY: Larry Coryell. Flying Dutchman LP. Geetar.
15) THOSE WHO KNOW HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT: Henry Kaiser. SST LP. Geetar.
16) GUSTAFSSON/LINDSJO: Mats on Bari, Lindsjo on acoustic guitar, live at Malmo 2011. Treffpunkt 7". Geetar.
17) HOSANNA AND PRALLEL [sic?]: Paal Nilssen-Love with Anders Hana (electric guitar). 2 tracks: "Hand Near Ass," and "Senvill Anal Poise." PNL Records 7" LP. Geetar.
18) BOAT: Sylvain Kassap (cl), Didier Pettit (violincello), Helene Laberrier (b), Edward Perraud (d, perc). Evidence-Fremeaux CD
19) VORTICES AND ANGELS: John Butcher, Derek Bailey, Rhodri Davis. Emanem CD.
20) LEE MORGAN: eponymous. Blue Note LP.
21) BLAULICHT: Soko Steidle. Jazzwerkstatt CD.
22) CELEBRATIONS: Gratkowski, Robertson, Nabatov, Manderscheid. Leo CD.
23) KANATA: Gratkowski, Gramss, Nakatani. Clean Feed CD.
24) UNPLUGGED MIND: Gratkowski, Lapin, Gramss, Bledsoe. Leo CD.
25) GRATHOVOX: Gratkowski, Van Hove, Oxley. Nuscope CD.
26) THE SHIFT: Gratkowski, Lehn, Zoubek, Manderscheid. Leo CD.
27) MIMETIC HOLDS: Gratkowski, Scott Looney, Damon Smith, Kjell Nordesen. Balance Point CD
28) LIVING LEGEND: Art Pepper, Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, Shelly Manne. Contemporary LP. Maybe one of my favorite cover portraits, totally "beat."
29) SHIRLEY SCOTT WITH STANLEY TURRENTINE: The drummer on this gig is Grasella Oliphant. Prestige LP.
30) DIZZY MEETS SONNY: That's Gillespie and Stitt. Verve LP.
31) DEJA VU: CSNY. Atlantic LP.
32) SONGS OF LEONARD COHEN: LC. Columbia LP. Is Cohen a spiritual predecessor of Bonnie Prince Billy?
33) LABOUR OF LUST: Nick Lowe. Columbia LP. Meh meh meh.
34) MONKEY ON A CHAIN GANG: House of Freaks. Rhino LP. Alas, not that freaky, but a sor of White Stripe-ish vibe to it.
35) HIGH VOLTAGE: AC/DC. ATCO LP. Every once in a while you need someone screaming from your speakers. This will do.
36) SCHOOLS OUT: Alice Cooper. Warner Bros LP.
37) NANTUCKET SLEIGH RIDE: Mountain. Windfall LP. Always have liked Mountain and Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi. FP produced Cream, and you can hear similarities between the 2 groups. Shot and killed by his wife, who got off with a slap on the wrist.
38) DISRAELI GEARS: Cream. ATCO LP. A Felix Pappalardi production.
39) HOUSES OF THE HOLY: Led Zeppelin. ATCO LP. ATCO must have been raking it in in those days.
40) KISS ME: The Cure. 2LP Elektra.
41) ATHENS, GA- INSIDE/OUT: Various groups that were on the Athens scene when REM broke-out. On the evidence here, most were not very good, but Pylon and Love Tractor seemed promising, and Bar-B-Q Killers had such a good name. IRS LP.
42) DIRTY MIND: Prince. WB LP.
43) BABBACOMBE LEE: Fairport Convention. A&M LP. A counterpart to Traffic's "John Barleycorn" (which is better), and even Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" and "Acqualung."
44) BLUES BREAKERS: John Mayall with Eric Clapton. London LP. Notice the careful wording of the title.
45) IT'S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL: Rolling Stones. Rolling Stones Records LP.
46) BEST OF OTIS REDDING: ATCO 2LP (oh yeah, minting money!). Utmost in soul singing.
47) BLACK MOSES: Isaac Hayes. 2LP Enterprise Records. On infamous Dynaflex, this is literally the thinnest vinyl I have ever handled, thinner even than RCA Dynaflex, which seems like a BN deep groove by comparison. As this vinyl is to deep groove, so is Isaac to Otis.
48) ALL ABOARD THE BLUE TRAIN: Johnny Cash. Sun Records LP. Just looking at the Sun label is rather inspirational.
49) SAME TRAIN, A DIFFERENT TIME: Merle Haggard ("sings the songs of Jimmy Rodgers"). Capitol LP. Not quite forgiven Merle for the 1960s.
50) I'M JOHN LEE HOOKER: Eponymous. Vee-Jay LP reissue.
51) LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS: Eponymous. Trip 2LP. Questionable provenance, but actually a fine LP.
52) THE BAND: Eponymous (damn). Capitol LP.
53) MUSIC FROM BIG PINK: The Band. Capitol LP.
54) SOH: LIVE IN LONDON: Alan Skidmore, Oxley, Ali Haurand. Jazzwerkstatt CD.
55) THERMAZ: Butcher, Andy Moor, Ton Lehn. Unsounds CD.
56) CURE FOR PAIN: Morphine. Ryko CD. Good group.
57) PRAYER MEETIN': Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine. BN LP.
58) COME DOWN: The Dandy Warhols. Capitol CD. A fave.
59) SNOW BLIND AVALANCHE: Flaherty, Corsano, Yeh. Important LP.
60) SUMMERTEETH: Wilco. Reprise CD.
61) PLENTY OF HORN: Ted Curson, Dolphy on 2 tracks. Prevue CD.
62) RAW AND RARE: The Von Bondies. Dimmak CD. I liked this.
63) MIRROR BALL: Neil Young with Pearl Jam. Reprise CD.
Another month of absolutely free listening!
