40 years ago; Sam Rivers' Streams

Forty years ago on July 6, 1973; Sam Rivers, Cecil McBee and Norman Conners performed at Montreux Jazz Festival Switzerland.

Sam's discography goes from his Blue Note leader dates of Contours and New Conception in 1965-66 to the Impluse! releases in 1973 of Streams, Hues, and Live.  These three albums define Sam in the avant free- jazz world.   The below video is not from this time frame but a little later in 1979.  It represents the spirit he brought the music.

  1. Thanks for the remembrance and vid clip. It just struck me that the Norman Connors that I mentioned in my last list ("Dance of Magic") must be the same Norman Connors on the Sam Rivers "Streams" album. Interesting connection. Connors had a lot of high-powered music friends and a fair discography of his own, but his star seems to have faded.
